Robert C. Atkinson, Esq.
Robert C. Atkinson is a registered patent attorney and partner of the firm. Mr. Atkinson earned a Juris Doctor degree in June 2006 from the State University of New York at Buffalo Law School, where he concentrated his studies in Intellectual Property Law. As a former design engineer for Leica Microsystems and Reichert, Inc., Mr. Atkinson has extensive experience in the field of optics and optical systems, as well as additional background in bio-molecular sensors, chemistry, and product development processes.
Mr. Atkinson practices in all aspects of intellectual property law, including patent prosecution in optics, chemistry, biotechnology, the mechanical and software arts. He also practices trademark law and all aspects of intellectual property litigation. He has experience in prosecution of patent applications from patentability search and opinions through patent issuance, infringement opinions and various aspects related to intellectual property litigation. Mr. Atkinson passed the July 2006 New York State Bar Examination and was admitted to practice in February 2007.
Mr. Atkinson worked in industry at Leica Microsystems and Reichert, Inc., where he filled many roles in the process of product design and development of optically based analytical laboratory instrumentation. The product families included analog and digital refractometers, spectrophotometers, and surface plasmon resonance biosensors. At Leica, he and another co-worker designed, developed, produced, and distributed a new biosensor product line based on the principle of surface plasmon resonance. Mr. Atkinson shares four U.S. patents related to these devices, as well as several foreign patents.
Mr. Atkinson participated in the 3/2 program offered between the State University of New York at Geneseo and the University at Buffalo. Upon completion of the five-year program, he received both a Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry from Geneseo, and a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering from Buffalo. During his studies at the University at Buffalo, he had the opportunity to assist in product development and an infringement investigation, while an intern with Leica Microsystems.
